Xiaomi 17 series embraces universal 100W fast charging
For a while now, Android phone manufacturers have been in a race to deliver the fastest charging speeds. However, many, like Xiaomi, opted for their own charging tech, leaving the universal USB Power Delivery (PD) standard in the dust. What this meant was, if you wanted those blazing-fast speeds, you were stuck using the charger that came with your phone.
But it appears this trend is about to change. The upcoming Xiaomi 17 series is set to fully support 100W USB PD PPS charging. What's even better is that Xiaomi says both their chargers and those from other brands can power up the Xiaomi 17 series at these high speeds. It's a welcome move. I remember being stuck with specific chargers just to get decent charging speeds; it wasn't fun.
Previous Xiaomi phones, like the Xiaomi 15 Pro, had fast charging, but when you plugged them into a regular USB PD charger, the charging speed dropped significantly. So, this move to embrace the universal standard is a big deal, because it means you can use pretty much any 100W USB PD PPS charger and a compatible cable to juice up your phone quickly. They're claiming a full charge in under 40 minutes. While this may not seem like a huge leap, keep in mind that the new phones are rumored to have larger batteries.
Speaking of batteries, the rumors suggest some hefty sizes. We're talking about a possible 7,000mAh battery with 90W charging on the base Xiaomi 17, a 6,300mAh battery with 100W charging on the Xiaomi 17 Pro, and a massive 7,500mAh battery with 100W charging on the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max.
By the way, Xiaomi is skipping the number 16 and going straight to 17. These phones are launching in China on September 25, 2025, with a global release expected later. It's about time other Android brands embrace universal fast charging. Hopefully, this move from Xiaomi will encourage other companies like OPPO, vivo, and OnePlus to follow suit. It might even put some pressure on giants like Samsung and Google, whose phones charge slower compared to others. The Galaxy S25 series, for example, only supports 45W fast charging, and the Pixel 10 series tops out at 27W. There's clearly room for improvement, and USB PD PPS is definitely the way to go.
