Pixel 10: 5 Key Upgrades You Shouldn't Underestimate
We're just weeks away from the Pixel 10's big reveal, and while some might see it as a minor upgrade at first glance, I think there's more than meets the eye. The design's familiar, and the cameras aren't drastically different, but the real magic lies in the details.
I feel that many crucial upgrades should be part of this series, and honestly, I think we’re all underestimating this Pixel 10 launch. Let's dive into the things I believe will make the Pixel 10 a game-changer.
The Google Tensor G5 Chip: A New Beginning
For a while now, there's been chatter about Google's custom-built Tensor chip. Recent whispers suggest the Tensor G5 in the Pixel 10 will be a ground-up redesign, crafted by Google and manufactured by TSMC using their 3nm process. This is a major departure from previous Tensor chips, which were inspired by Exynos and manufactured by Samsung.
Since shifting to Tensor with the Pixel 6, Google faced issues due to its Exynos dependence. Tensor processors are often slower, tend to overheat, have connectivity problems, and drain power quicker. It's not a secret why Samsung uses Qualcomm processors in its Galaxy S series and why Qualcomm moved from Samsung Foundry to TSMC after its Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 problems.
I am personally excited to see the impact of switching to TSMC's 3nm process with the Tensor G5. I'm hoping for a faster phone that doesn't overheat and has great battery life. If the new Tensor G5 delivers on these expectations, it'll be a major win for the Pixel 10, making the upgrade worthwhile.
Qi2 and MagSafe: Wireless Charging Done Right
The Pixel 10 is rumored to feature Qi2 and MagSafe compatibility. If Google integrates it properly, avoiding the "buy a magnetic case" workaround, it could be a game-changer. It seems like the Pixel 10 will have the metallic array to connect directly to MagSafe accessories and chargers.
While it may not be a big deal for tech enthusiasts, proper Qi2 integration is essential. It'll be more integral to the phone, not a hidden perk. There will be a larger choice of magnetic cases and larger adoption from MagSafe accessory makers. Even those who prefer to go case-less can enjoy all the accessories they want. Hopefully, we'll see some Pixel-only or Pixel-inspired accessories too.
Telephoto Lens on the Base Pixel 10: Zoom for Everyone
For the first time in recent history, the standard Pixel will boast a telephoto lens. I'm thrilled about this because everyone wants zoom, even if they don't realize it yet.
I can’t overstate the importance of Google bringing this zoom camera to the base Pixel 10. This addition levels the playing field, especially for those who can't afford the Pro models. It might even push Samsung and Apple to do the same.
Battery and Charging Improvements: A Much-Needed Boost
The Pixel 10 series should see improvements in battery life and charging speeds. Coupled with the Tensor G5's efficiency, this means longer battery life and faster charging for Pixel phones. While I don't expect a full charge in 15 minutes, any improvement is welcome.
Gemini Space: The Future of At A Glance?
There's talk of a Gemini Space feature, possibly launching with the Pixel 10. It seems to be an improved At A Glance with live updates, finance tracking, and a new Daily Hub. I hope this "Daily Hub" becomes a central place for contextual information, similar to Google Now. If Google can recreate that magic, the Pixel 10 could have a truly smart assistant.
Factor in brighter displays and other smaller tweaks, and the Pixel 10 could be one of the most significant Pixel upgrades in years. I, for one, am excited.
