iPhone Display Roadmap: Future Designs Up to 2030

Mobile Technology

The future of the iPhone display is a hot topic, and recently, a well-known display analyst, Ross Young from Counterpoint Research, has added fuel to the fire. He's been discussing potential display changes for upcoming iPhones, particularly the iPhone 18 Pro in 2026 and the special 20th-anniversary iPhone in 2027.

There's been some disagreement about what the iPhone 18 Pro's display will look like. While one report suggested a small hole cutout for the front camera, Young believes Apple will stick with a narrower Dynamic Island. How? By moving some of the Face ID components under the display.

Adding to the mix, Mark Gurman from Bloomberg has also mentioned Apple plans to reduce the Dynamic Island's size on some iPhone models next year. So, it seems likely that the iPhone 18 will still feature a smaller Dynamic Island, rather than a simple camera hole.

What about the iPhone's 20th anniversary in 2027? Young thinks it'll still have that smaller Dynamic Island. However, this clashes with Gurman's prediction of a completely uninterrupted display. It's all speculation at this point. It's really interesting to me how sources so frequently contradict each other, leaving us to wonder which rumor, if any, will come to fruition.

Looking further ahead, Young envisions Apple putting all Face ID components under the display by 2028. This would leave only the selfie camera as a hole-punch cutout, which reminds me of designs we've seen on other phones.

And the dream of an all-screen iPhone? According to Young, we might have to wait until 2030 for that to become a reality. That's quite a few years down the line! Personally, I'm curious to see how Apple will innovate in the meantime to keep us excited about their displays.

While all this information is floating around, there's an image that merges several rumors. This includes the possibility of curved glass edges and super-slim bezels on the 20th-anniversary iPhone. While Young hasn't confirmed this, he also hasn't denied it.

All in all, if you ask me, the future of the iPhone display looks interesting! The next few years could bring significant changes to how we interact with our devices.
