iPhone 18: Rumored to Pack 50% More RAM for All Models
Rumors are swirling, and I'm here to break it down for you. Apple's next big thing, the iPhone 18, might just pack a serious punch in the memory department. We're talking about a possible 50% increase compared to earlier models. If the news is correct, all new iPhone 18 models would ship with 12GB.
Currently, if you look at the latest iPhone Air, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max, they're rocking 12GB of memory. That's a significant jump from previous versions, a whole 4GB more. The reason? Well, it seems like on-device AI is getting pretty demanding, needing that extra RAM to function smoothly. However, the regular iPhone 17 still sticks with 8GB.
Now, the buzz suggests that Apple wants to level the playing field with the iPhone 18. They reportedly want all four models to have the same amount of memory. To make this happen, they've supposedly asked Samsung, a major supplier of iPhone RAM, to ramp up the production of LPDDR5X chips for the upcoming lineup. Samsung's latest LPDDR5X chips, launched in 2024, only come in 12GB and 16GB configurations. This pretty much eliminates the possibility of an 8GB iPhone 18.
Apple isn't putting all its eggs in one basket, though. I've heard they're also talking to SK Hynix and Micron to secure additional mobile DRAM supply. It makes sense, right? Diversifying your suppliers is always a smart move.
When Can We Expect These New iPhones?
If the roadmap holds, we can anticipate the iPhone Air 2, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a foldable iPhone to hit the shelves in the fall of 2026. The standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e should follow in the first half of 2027. Of course, these are just rumors for now, so take it with a grain of salt. However, I am excited to see if these upgrades make the user experience a whole lot better!
