iPhone 18 Pro leak puts pressure on Samsung’s aging flagship strategy
Word on the street is that Apple is planning some big moves for its iPhone 18 Pro lineup and their first foldable phone, possibly named the iPhone Fold. If the rumors are true, Samsung might need to step up its game.
According to analyst Jeff Pu, Apple is set to launch the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the iPhone Fold in the latter half of 2026. The regular iPhone 18 is expected to be released in 2027, along with the iPhone 18e and potentially an iPhone Air 2.
Reportedly, the iPhone 18 Pro series and iPhone Fold will boast the Apple A20 Pro processor, built using a 2nm process, and WMCM packaging. Additionally, all three phones are said to feature 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and an 18MP front camera. The iPhone Fold is expected to have two front cameras, one on each display.
Under-Display Face ID and Variable Aperture
The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max might feature a "structured light" Face ID sensor located under the display. YouTuber Jon Prosser suggests that this under-display Face ID sensor will be on the left side of the display, which will also require the front camera to be moved. Because of these changes, Dynamic Island's size should be reduced.
Adding to the excitement, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max could introduce a variable aperture on the main rear camera. This feature, which Samsung once used in its Galaxy S9 series, would allow for better control of light entering the sensor, enhancing image quality in various lighting conditions. It feels like Samsung innovated in the past, but now is stagnating!
Speaking of aesthetics, Prosser also mentions that Apple is experimenting with new colors for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max: Burgundy, Brown, and Purple.
Additionally, it seems the Camera Control button will shift to pressure-based sensing for easier manufacturing and repairs. Apple is also reportedly working on 5G network support over satellite, a feature that could change the connectivity landscape. As of now, there's no indication that Samsung is exploring this feature. It's clear that Apple is pushing the boundaries, while Samsung seems to be lagging.
If these leaks turn out to be true, Samsung needs to bring something new to the table with its Galaxy S27 series. What do you think? Will Apple's rumored innovations put pressure on Samsung?
