Google's Pixel to Expand Call Recording: What You Need to Know
I've always found it a bit odd how difficult it is to record calls on Android. Given how easily our phones handle photos and videos, you'd think recording a simple voice call wouldn't be a big deal. But, legal issues make things tricky, which affects how Google approaches this feature.
There was a glimmer of hope recently when Google's support pages suggested call recording was coming to Pixel 6 and newer phones. However, it was difficult to find users that actually had it, so it felt like a false start. Now, we're finally getting some clarity. Google is showcasing voice-call features on Pixel phones, including the Pixel 10. Amidst all the interesting new features, they mentioned call recording.
It seems Google is planning to make call recording widely available in all countries where Pixel phones are sold, not limiting it nation by nation as I expected. This raises questions about how users will ensure they comply with local recording laws. Will there be other restrictions? I imagine some users might see this as Google shifting responsibility onto them.
Besides call recording, there are also updates on Scam Detection and Call Notes, which are expanding to more countries. And, excitingly, Android Auto will support call screening and Call Notes sometime in 2025. That's a huge win for Android Auto users, and I am definitely eager to see how well it works!
