Google Photos Gets AI-Powered Tools: Turn Photos into Videos and Illustrations

Mobile

Google Photos is getting a serious upgrade, and I think it's about time! I mean, it's already my go-to spot for storing all my pictures, but now it's becoming a mini creative studio too. They're adding a couple of new AI-powered tools that could seriously change how we interact with our photos. I can already see the possibilities!

First off, there's this cool photo-to-video feature powered by Veo 2. Imagine taking a static photo and turning it into a six-second video clip. That sounds amazing, right? It seems pretty easy to use too. Just pick a photo and choose either "Subtle movements" or "I’m feeling lucky." I think it's a nice addition, and who knows what kind of fun, creative stuff people will come up with? For example, you could turn a simple picture of your pet into a funny little animation.

There's also this feature called Remix that really caught my eye. It's going to let you transform your photos into different illustrations – think anime, comics, sketches, or even 3D animation. It sounds like a blast, and I am looking forward to using it to give my photos a unique twist.

However, finding all these tools can sometimes feel like a treasure hunt. So, Google is introducing a new "Create" tab in the app, which will basically gather all the editing tools in one spot. It's supposed to show up in August, and I think it's a smart move. No more digging through menus – everything will be right there at your fingertips. The "Create" tab will appear in the bottom bar between Collections and Search.

For me, the most interesting part is that Google will be adding invisible SynthID digital watermarks to all AI-generated content in Photos. This is important because, as AI becomes more powerful, it's crucial to know what's real and what's AI-generated. Plus, there will be visible watermarks as well.

It’s not just Google Photos that is getting some love; YouTube is also jumping on the bandwagon. YouTube Shorts will be getting the photo-to-video function soon, expanding it to more regions later this year. Furthermore, a new AI playground feature is already available on YouTube. This playground will showcase Google's newest AI creation tools, a gallery of examples, and pre-filled prompts, so you can easily get started.
