Gemini Space: A Fresh Look at Google's Enhanced 'At a Glance' Widget for Pixel

Mobile

Okay, so Google's been tinkering with something called Gemini Space for Pixel phones, and it's looking pretty interesting. We had a hunch it might be similar to Samsung's Now Bar, which gives you quick snippets of info. Well, we managed to get it up and running, and it seems like that hunch was right!

Basically, Gemini Space is like a souped-up version of the "At a Glance" widget you already have on your Pixel. Instead of just the date and weather, it can show you things like sports scores, birthday reminders, and potentially even financial updates. I think it will be a game changer for those who want to stay informed without unlocking their phones all the time.

I was able to activate it on a Pixel 9 using the latest Android Canary build, and the cards showed up on both the lock screen and the Always On Display. Imagine glancing at your phone and seeing the score of the big game or a reminder to call your mom on her birthday. That's the idea. It's like having a personal assistant right there on your screen.

However, it's not quite ready for prime time yet. While I did get the sports and birthday cards working, the finance and "Daily Hub" cards didn't want to cooperate. But that's to be expected since it's still under development. Google hasn't officially announced Gemini Space yet, so we don't know exactly when it'll be released to the public. But rest assured, I will keep my eyes on it and let you know as soon as I hear anything.

One thing I'm really curious about is how customizable Gemini Space will be. Will we be able to choose which cards we want to see and tailor the information to our specific needs? That would be fantastic. I believe that personalized experience is key to making this feature truly useful. I can already see myself ditching some of my other widgets in favor of this new, streamlined approach.
