I remember when Google's CEO, Sundar Pichai, mentioned during an earnings call back in April that Gemini would eventually take over from Google Assistant in cars. It felt like a distant promise then, but it seems the future is finally here for some Android Auto users!

Several folks over on Reddit, according to 9to5Google, are reporting that the Gemini update has indeed landed on their devices. It looks like this change is happening on the server-side, and it seems the beta testers rocking Android Auto 15.6 or 15.7 are the first to get a taste. The publication even confirmed that they're seeing the same thing on their Pixel 10 Pro XL, connected to different car displays, while running Android Auto 15.6. It's still unclear whether this is exclusive to the beta program or just a lucky coincidence.

I think about Google's recent partnership with Mercedes-Benz, where they showed off how well Gemini works in a car. The AI is designed to understand more natural language, maintain context, and even handle follow-up questions. From what I saw in the demo, the interaction was just as smooth as talking to Gemini Live on your phone, which is pretty impressive.

However, it isn't all sunshine and roses. It sounds like Gemini has a little trouble with nicknames. One user pointed out that it doesn't recognize terms like "mother," "wife," or "boss." Despite this hiccup, the overall experience seems to be positive. Once Gemini hits your device, you should find a new Gemini settings section where you can toggle options like "Interrupt Live responses" and "Share precise location." Just a heads up: these settings are enabled by default.
