Galaxy Z Fold 8: My Wishlist for Samsung's Next Foldable Phone

Mobile

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is a remarkable device, and I must say that it is the thinnest foldable phone available right now. Now that foldable phones are approaching the thinness of regular smartphones, it's time to focus on other improvements. After using the Fold 7, a few things immediately came to mind that I'd love to see addressed in the next iteration.

One of my biggest concerns is durability. While the Fold 7 has some water resistance (IPX8), it's still vulnerable to dust. Let's face it, paying a premium price and you still have to baby your device? I think it's time Samsung steps up and offers proper dust resistance, like an IP68 rating, in the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Other manufacturers are already doing it, and it would provide peace of mind knowing your expensive phone can handle more than just a splash of water. It would make the phone much more durable, in my opinion.

A More Robust Screen

That leads me to the next point: the screen. I know foldable screens are made of plastic with a layer of ultra-thin glass, but they still feel soft and fragile. I’m not expecting a fully glass foldable screen anytime soon, but I'd love to see improvements in durability, scratch resistance, and glare reduction. Imagine a screen that feels more like glass, is less prone to damage, and has a better oleophobic coating. Samsung has already made some progress by using thicker ultra-thin glass on the Fold 7, but there's still room for improvement. Let's hope the Fold 8 will provide a more robust feeling.

While it's not my biggest gripe, I know the crease is something that bothers many people when using foldable phones. A crease-free screen on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 would be a welcome improvement. Now that they have refined their thinnest, that would be the next natural step.

More Battery Power and Faster Charging

Despite the design improvements, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 still has the same 4,400mAh battery as previous models. Some competitors are offering 5,000mAh or even 6,000mAh batteries in their foldables. A battery capacity increase, even a modest one of 5% to 10%, would be greatly appreciated, especially for those who frequently use the folding screen. It would allow for more continuous usage. Moreover, it's time for Samsung to upgrade the 25W wired charging, that is being delivered since the Galaxy Z Fold 3. If Samsung increases the battery size, faster charging becomes even more crucial.

Camera Improvements

Finally, let's talk about the cameras. While the Galaxy Z Fold 7 boasts a 200MP main camera, the ultrawide and telephoto lenses are starting to feel outdated. In particular, that 3x telephoto camera is starting to feel a little old, in my opinion. While the foldable design poses challenges for zoom camera hardware, other companies have found clever solutions. A better telephoto camera on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 would significantly enhance the overall photography experience. Something that could compete with Google's Pixel Fold, for example.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 has a lot going for it, but these are the improvements I'm hoping to see in the Galaxy Z Fold 8. I think that addressing these issues would make it a more compelling and complete device.
