Foldable iPhone Design Details Revealed

Mobile Technology

A recent leak from a reliable source within Apple's supply chain offers a glimpse into the design of the upcoming foldable iPhone. The device, expected to launch next year, is reportedly adopting a book-style folding mechanism.

The information suggests a significant difference in display technology between the inner and outer screens. The internal display, purportedly measuring 7.8 inches, will utilize an under-screen camera, providing a cleaner, uninterrupted viewing experience. Conversely, the 5.5-inch external display will feature a more conventional hole-punch camera, a design element common in many current foldable smartphones.

Design and Specifications

The leaked specifications point to a 14.1:1 aspect ratio for the inner display and a 14.6:1 aspect ratio for the outer display. A side-mounted Touch ID sensor is also anticipated, a design choice possibly driven by space constraints within the slim foldable form factor. This design echoes earlier suggestions, confirming the inclusion of a dual-lens rear camera system, complemented by front-facing cameras accessible in both folded and unfolded states.

While the precise placement and integration of the outer display's hole-punch camera remains unclear—speculation ranges from a visible hole-punch to a possible integration into a minimized Dynamic Island-like design—the absence of Face ID is notable. This may be a deliberate choice to streamline the design and potentially reduce manufacturing complexity for this initial iteration of the foldable device.

The device's development appears to be in a relatively advanced stage. Reports indicate that the device has entered the New Product Introduction (NPI) phase at Foxconn, a key step before mass production. This suggests that the majority of specifications may be finalized, despite some elements remaining potentially subject to change.

Industry analysts predict a premium price point, estimating that the first-generation foldable iPhone will be priced between $2,000 and $2,300. Mass production is tentatively scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026, with a market release expected late next year.
