Find Hub's Enhanced Tracking with UWB
Google's recent Android I/O announcements included a significant upgrade to its device tracking capabilities. The rebranded Find Hub application, formerly known as Find My Device, will now incorporate Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology, allowing for more precise location tracking of compatible devices.
UWB Integration: A Game Changer
The integration of UWB functionality marks a substantial improvement in Android's tracking capabilities, bringing it closer to the precision offered by competing technologies like Apple's AirTag. This enhancement allows Find Hub to not only pinpoint the location of a lost item but also provide directional cues, leading the user directly to the device using an arrow and distance indicator.
Early reports indicate that the UWB functionality is already available for some users. This suggests a faster than expected rollout of this highly anticipated feature. The feature relies on the user having both a UWB-compatible device, such as the Motorola Tag, and a smartphone equipped with a UWB radio. Newer Android flagship models generally include this technology. While Apple has offered similar UWB-based tracking for some time, Google's implementation brings this sophisticated technology to the Android ecosystem.
For users to take advantage of the improved tracking precision, an update to the Find Hub app is required. This update is expected to be rolled out broadly soon. Once the update is received, users with compatible hardware can experience the benefits of real-time directional tracking, significantly simplifying the process of recovering lost or misplaced items.
