Android 16 Improves Do Not Disturb Access

Mobile OS Updates

The latest Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1 release introduces a significant change to the way users interact with the Do Not Disturb (DND) function. Following the removal of a dedicated DND toggle from Quick Settings in Android 15, Google has seemingly reinstated this functionality, albeit with a modified approach.

Previously, users relied on a single tap to switch between normal mode and DND. This direct access has been integrated back into the updated “Modes” tile within Quick Settings. This tile now offers a dual functionality. Tapping the left side icon toggles DND on or off directly. Interacting with the right side of the tile opens the full Modes menu, providing access to other settings and modes.

Dual Functionality in Quick Settings

This dual functionality extends beyond the DND setting. Reports indicate similar behavior in other Quick Settings tiles, such as the Bluetooth tile, enabling direct on/off toggling while maintaining access to the expanded menu. This design choice offers users a balance between quick access and comprehensive control.

The implementation, however, requires a specific configuration. Users must set the "Duration for Quick Settings" within DND settings to either "until you turn off" or "For X hour" for this direct toggle to function correctly. This seemingly minor prerequisite ensures that the quick toggle is contextually aware of the intended duration.

The availability of this improved DND integration is expected to arrive with the upcoming June Pixel Drop release, providing a more streamlined user experience and efficient management of notification preferences.
