AirPods Pro 3: Smaller Case and a New Button?

I've been hearing some interesting whispers about the upcoming AirPods Pro 3, and if the rumors are true, we could be seeing some subtle but welcome changes. It sounds like Apple might be shrinking down the charging case just a tad. While it won't be a complete redesign, any reduction in size is a win in my book – makes it that much easier to slip into your pocket.

However, the more intriguing change is the potential swap of the physical pairing button on the back for a capacitive button on the front, similar to what we've seen with the AirPods 4. If you're like me, you probably don't use that pairing button all that often, but its always there. This could mean a cleaner look and maybe even some extra functionality. Imagine being able to control playback with a simple tap on the case – that would be pretty slick.

Accessory manufacturers are probably breathing a sigh of relief too. Without the need to accommodate a physical button on the back, designing cases for the AirPods Pro 3 should be a little easier. I suspect this will lead to even more cool and creative case options.

And don't worry, it seems the lanyard loop is here to stay. For those of us who like to keep our AirPods close at hand, that's good news.

Word on the street is that we might not have to wait too long for these new AirPods Pro to drop. There's talk of an announcement as soon as September, during Apple's big event. If that's true, we're just around the corner from seeing what Apple has been cooking up. I, for one, am excited to see if these rumors pan out.
